Stolen cigarettes seized |

Police and Customs officials seized some $120 million worth of stolen cigarettes last Saturday on the grounds of a construction company close to the Kingston Wharves. No one has been arrested in connection with the find, which included more than 500,000 sticks of cigarettes. Reports are that acting on information, Customs' Contraband Enforcement Team (CET) went to a premises occupied by a construction company, bordered by the Kingston Container Terminals (KCT) sometime after 11 p.m., where a search was carried out. Seventy-five master cases of cigarettes were found. Further investigations revealed broken seals on a container at KCT waiting to be exported to St Maarten. Inspections carried out on that unit revealed cigarettes of the same packaging and type were found at the construction company. Officials believe some boxes were missing from the container. The container, along with the 75 cases of the cigarettes, were subsequently seized by the CET. Attempts to get further details on the matter was unsuccessful as a Customs representative told THE STAR that further disclosures could not be made at this time. Investigations continue. |
