A man was reportedly shot and injured during a clash between residents of a section of Whitehall in Negril, Westmoreland, and the police yesterday. The clash is said to have occurred about midday during a demolition exercise which was to see the removal of a number of squatters. THE STAR heard that a number of policemen were providing security for workmen contracted by the National Housing Develop-ment Corporation. It is said that a group of residents began to act in what the police say was a violent manner. Shots were also reportedly fired and tear gas canisters expelled as the police tried to diffuse the crowd. Following the clash, several persons were taken into custody and one man, Andrew Lawrence, was charged with using indecent and abusive language, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. He was granted station bail and is set to go to court next week Tuesday. |
