A man was given a one-year sentence in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday for attempting to export ganja. Wayne Christopher Reid of a Corporate Area address pleaded guilty to the charges of possession of, dealing in and taking steps to export ganja. In addition, he was fined $16,800. Allegations are that the accused was stopped during a routine spot check at the Norman Manley International Airport. When he was searched, it is alleged that he had a quantity of 750 grams (13/4lb) of ganja in his possession. Reid was fined $2,800 or six months in prison for possession; $5,600 or six months for dealing; and $8,400 or six months for taking steps to export ganja. A mandatory one-year sentence was given which is to run concurrently and consecutively. This means if the fines are not paid, he will serve 18 months in prison. |
