Didier Drogba was named Africa's footballer of the year for the second time yesterday, his 32nd birthday.

Drogba, the Ivory Coast captain and Chelsea striker, received the 2009 award from the African Football Confederation, topping a vote by Africa's national coaches.

Also shortlisted were his club teammate Michael Essien of Ghana, and Samuel Eto'o of Cameroon, a former three-time recipient.

Drogba previously won the award in 2006, and was second in 2007. He missed attending those awards because he was at the African Cup of Nations. When CAF insisted nominees attend the ceremony, Drogba protested by making himself unavailable for future CAF awards.

He ended that feud last month, after talking with Ivory Coast officials and CAF president Issa Hayatou.

Last year, Drogba scored and helped Chelsea win the FA Cup, and reach the Champions League semi-finals. He also led Ivory Coast back to their second World Cup.
