Gas pump attendant to know fate April 7

A 28-year-old gas pump attendant who is accused of using a skimming device to acquire the card information of customers who used their debit and credit cards to pay for gas, is to be sentenced on April 7.

The accused, Dwayne Smith, who was employed to a gas station in St Andrew, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud before Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey.

The facts are that between December 21, 2009 and February 23, 2010, the accused used the device to clone the cards of customers and then withdrew money from their accounts, to the tune of $1,384,495.00.

The matter was reported to the Fraud Squad, and it was soon discovered that all the victims, who had realized that money was missing from their accounts, had last swiped their cards at the specific gas station.

On March 2, the accused man's Kingston 11 home was searched and a skimming device, used to capture card information was found. He was subsequently arrested and charged.

When the matter was mentioned in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, and after the accused pleaded guilty, a lawyer speaking on his behalf, asked the court to request a social enquiry report before sentencing the accused.

This request was granted and the matter was set for sentencing on April 7. The accused was remanded.
