Benefits of using Highway 2000 T-tag system

Transjamaican Highway (TJH), the developer of Highway 2000, manages a 'Frequent User' rebate system greatly benefiting T-tag customers using the Portmore leg of Highway 2000.

The rebate system has been in use since the Portmore leg was opened. Under this system, T-Tag users have increased savings and receive a rebate of approximately 17 per cent on a minimum of 10 trips completed within a seven-day period. The system also calculates the applicable rebate when the minimum number of trips is completed in excess of the seven days. In addition, the percentage rebate also increases in relation to the frequency of trips.

TJH advises that there are no applicable charges or expiry dates for T-Tags. The T-Tags and swipe cards can be obtained from the sales offices at all toll plazas for a minimum of $500 in toll rates. Subsequent account replenishments or top-ups are facilitated at the sales offices (between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. daily); in the manual lanes at the tollbooths (using cash only); and at Paymaster locations.

technical solution

Bouygues Travaux Publics Jamaica (BYTPJ), the original contractor of Highway 2000, has been actively researching a technical solution to the extremely complex ground conditions on the Portmore leg of Highway 2000 heading towards Portmore. Rehabilitative work will be carried out by BYTPJ, in accordance with their contract with TJH. Work will begin as soon as possible and will be completed with minimal upheaval to road users.

TJH advises that recent reported comments in Parliament that "motorists using the Portmore leg of Highway 2000 had been subject to a 100 per cent increase in toll fees over the last two years" are inaccurate.

TJH concedes that Class 1 motorists using the Portmore leg are paying two times the rates that were applicable at the opening of the Portmore Toll Plaza. However, actual increases in rates attributable to TJH, since the opening of the plaza total just over 30 per cent, as opposed to inflation of approximately 40 per cent between August 2006 and August 2009.
