![]() Contributed - Suzette Barrett To produce a smash hit is in itself a challenge, to extend that success into subsequent sequels is an even harder endeavour. Central to the show's continued appeal is not just the expansion of the familiar story, but the colourful characters to whom audiences have become attached show after show, and the actors who make them come alive. At age 18, Barrett made her stage debut in Michael Denton's Hear Sey, which signalled the start of an extremely successful career. She has since worked on smash hits such as Two Fowl a Mi Yaad, Granny Rule I, Missa Dweet Nice I and II, Passa Passa and More Passa, Bad Mind, powerful stage presence Barrett has worked as stage manager for the play Bashment Granny 2 and production assistant for Bashment Granny, The Movie. In the series, Pearl is originally from the ghetto and has dreams of making it big. Though educated, she determines that is not enough to attain the assets she thinks are hers for the taking and resolves that the shortest route is to seduce and manipulate well-off men in her community. In Passa Passa, she winds up with a house willed to her by an old man. In More Passa Passa she bears YaYa (a child) for the superintendent to permanently have control over his assets. In Passa Passa Daily, the plaza given to YaYa by the superintendent falls under Pearl's control with YaYa off to university. Pearl manages to do all this while still maintaining her marriage to Frank. With all the action in Passa Passa Daily taking place on the plaza, Pearl now has the opportunity to not only show off what she has attained, but to extend her controlling attitude beyond just the 'well-off' men in her community. Is Pearl satisfied with all she has achieved? Definitely not! With husband Frank now overseas, she has her sights set on a new target - Mayor Blackwood! Passa Passa Daily was written by Everton Dawkins and directed by Garfield Reid. |
