Stewart targets better start

Olympic and World silver-medallist Kerron Stewart has been working hard this season to correct her technique as she looks forward to even greater international honours at next year's IAAF World Championships in athletics.

Stewart, who posted a laboured 11.21 in the 100m at her last outing at the Montreuil meeting in France, is looking to strengthen her technique in the first 30m of the event, and is hoping that an improved start will help her to close the gap on her rivals.

"My objective is always to run fast and run to the best of my ability," said Stewart in a telephone conversation from France, where she will remain until the weekend when she is expected to line up in the 200m at another meet.

"Technically I am always working because that's how you run faster," Stewart continued. "My objective is always to run fast and run to the best of my ability. I want to be more aggressive through the first 30m and hold that throughout my drive phase."

While focusing on her own development, Stewart who claimed 100m silver at both the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, as well as a 200m bronze medal also in Beijing, has also been keeping a close eye on her rivals, with American Carmelita Jeter and countrywomen Veronica Campbell-Brown and Shelly-Ann Fraser showing positive early form.

"I think everybody is progressing well, there are no major championships this year but the show must go on," Stewart said.

expressed satisfaction

Turning her attention to her last run, Stewart expressed satisfaction considering the poor weather conditions and negative wind readings. The sprinter is hoping to lower her season's best in the 200m on Saturday.

"It (race) was ok based on the weather conditions, I'm just happy that I managed to finish healthy," Stewart said. "I will be very happy with a season's best, if I fall short of that I will still be grateful."

Stewart is still trying to decide with her coach whether or not she will feature at the upcoming national trials and is still uncertain about her participation at this year's Commonwealth Games in India.

"I am not sure about (National Trails) that's something that my coach and I are still talking about," said Stewart. "With (the) Commonwealth Games so late down in the season I am really not sure."
