Residents want patrol while bicycles rust at station |
|||||
![]() Rasbert Turner - A number of discarded bicycles once used by the Portmore police to patrol are seen here, left to rot at the station. Rasbert Turner, Star Writer While residents of Portmore are calling for the return of the bicycle patrol, a number of the two-wheel transports continue to rust at the Portmore Police Station. "Let me tell you, when there were police patrolling on bicycles, we have less robberies of cellphones, houses and other such crimes were under control," Novelette, a housewife, said. The police recently admitted that there was an increase in criminal activities in the Greater Portmore communities. Novelette's view was echoed by others who said crimes in their community have increased since the cycles have been off the streets for almost a year. THE PORTMORE STAR visited the Portmore Police Station and saw several bicycles in varying states of disrepair. One of the cycles even had the helmet of its former operator hanging on it. Administrative officer for St Catherine South Division, Deputy Superintendent Pauline Foster-Turner, said there are plans afoot to fix the bicycles. "The police were better able to navigate the narrow pathways that exist, especially in the Greater Portmore community. We are, therefore, going to get them fixed," DSP Foster-Turner said. She said that in addition to using personnel that have already been trained, more officers would be brought in to police the communities. Meanwhile, residents said they hope the problem will be resolved so the police can start riding again. |
