Motorist pleads guilty to forgery

A motorist who was denied legitimate car insurance for his vehicle, and who was so determined to secure insurance, so much so that he purchased forged insurance documents, avoided maximum prison sentence yesterday.

Fidel Davis, pleaded guilty to forgery, uttering forged documents and conspiracy to deceive in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

Davis was given an opportunity by Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey to convince her why he should not receive maximum sentence for his crimes.

At the same time, RM Pusey hypothetically asked Davis what would happen if he was driving on the road and met in an accident whereby he was at fault and it resulted in a child being injured or maimed. Davis offered no response.

RM Pusey suggested he would have fled the accident scene to avoid prosecution because of his lack of insurance coverage.

Davis later said, "Your honour mi a beg yuh a chance ... me not going to do it again".

He explained he had to acquire the forged insurance document because he needed it to operate his vehicle which he uses to transport water to and from his house because there's a water shortage in his community.

Davis was eventually fined $40,000 or six months for forgery and $30,000 or six months for uttering forged documents. A no order was made on the conspiracy charge.
