A man who assaulted a woman and stole her gold chain, did not get the mercy he asked for in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court. Instead, he got a sentence of nine months in jail. The accused, Andrew Williams is charged with robbery with aggravation, malicious destruction of property and assaulting a female. The allegations are that on the day in question, the accused approached the complainant and her child and brandished a knife. He allegedly grabbed her gold chain before slapping her across the face. When he appeared in court, Williams said he was seeking lenience from the court. He told Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey: "Dat day I was smoke out and alcohol out, is since I come into custody dat I know back myself." To this the RM replied, " suppose one day I come here coked out and rum out and decide to sentence you?" She then sentenced the accused to nine months imprisonment at hard labour for the robbery and 30 days in jail for assault.
