Sisters to Sisters, the non-profit charity formed two years ago to manage the collection and handing over of funds from a local all-female mediathon, is finally set to make the presentation of the funds to the two institutions on whose behalf the funds were collected. The presentation ceremony will be at the Women's Centre on Trafalgar Road today. "We are quite proud to be able to hand over the funds that were entrusted to us," Paula-Anne Porter Jones, director of Sisters to Sisters, and mediathon project manager said in a release. "This has been a long process - not just the staging of the event and the collection of the money, but the long two-year wait while the Ministry sourced an appropriate location for the Shelter for Battered Women, which the funds are in large part for. We were ecstatic last week when we got the call that finally a location had been confirmed." The release stated that at the end of the mediathon staged in April 2008, which saw scores of women in media and entertainment lending their talents to the cause, over nine million dollars in pledges of cash and kind had been garnered. "Unfortunately we were only able to actually collect about six million in cash, " said Porter Jones, "However, in the time since then, we have had the funds on fixed deposit and with the interest that has accrued, we are now able to hand over about eight million dollars to the institutions that entrusted us with the effort in the first place." |
