Darby Sr, Shand to double
Jimmie, Star Racing Writer

TRAINERS Robert Darby Sr and Desmond Shand have early and late doubles, respectively, lined up on tomorrow's nine-race card at Caymanas Park, the first of four race meets in a week.

Darby Sr should start the day on a winning note with EL DIABLO in the opening event at 1820 metres before greeting HEY TRAIN in the winners' enclosure for the 1400-metre fourth race.

Shand should strike later in the afternoon with RESTLESS MARQUE at a mile in the seventh and BORA BORA going half-furlong longer in the eighth.

EL DIABLO and HEY TRAIN, both formerly trained by Vincent Edwards, should outstay their rivals with apprentice riders astride.

EL DIABLO is down in class among $450,000 claimers after being pushed up to $500,000 as a filler for then stablemate BIG BARGAIN in an eight-horse field at a mile on July 17. BIG BARGAIN was caught close home by TOBAGO whereas EL DIABLO raced among the backmarkers, but still closed in the stretch run to finish 10 lengths fourth with 52.0 kilos.

out-of-class

Three days earlier, EL DIABLO had failed by a head to beat out-of-class REDEMPTION SONG on a $450,000 tag, confirming he was just out for the run when TOBAGO nabbed BIG BARGAIN.

Back among his peers, where he also placed third at a mile on June 19, beaten a length by SLEDGE and PASSA PASSA, EL DIABLO, with hot Jevvanne Erwin aboard, is expected to sit off the pace while Tensang Chung's pair of DANIELLE MY GIRL alternate on the lead.

They'll try running a relay on EL DIABLO but neither has his staying power and should be gobbled up by the rangy chestnut gelding in the stretch run.

HEY TRAIN should wrap Darby Sr's double without much trouble. The seven-year-old gelding has the pace and staying power to stalk and quicken past rivals early in the straight.

battle royal

On July 10, HEY TRAIN had a battle royal with LATIN KING at 1300 metres, duelling the fit repeat winner the entire distance in a six-furlong split of 1:14.1 and final time of 1:22.0, allowing the out-of-class horse 3.5 kilos or eight pounds.

LATIN KING returned last week Wednesday to beat MISS TIMS and NATURAL HEART, two of the runners HEY TRAIN face tomorrow. Darby Sr has called four-kilo claimer Conrod Ellis to have his charge come in at 50.0 kilos and no more.

Meanwhile, Shand has RESTLESS MARQUE working sweetly in the mornings and won't lose at a mile after going an easy 1:49.3, seven in 1:34.4, last week Thursday. Not wanting to change a good thing, Shand has called up his trusted rider, Clive Lynch, who was awarded last Wednesday's fifth event aboard FLAWLESS TALENT.

BORA BORA's 1:26.0 for seven furlongs on June 19 stands out like a flare on a pitch-black night and it would be insane, unless the clock was wrong, to go against him, no matter the argument about 'time only matters when in jail'.

Round off those Track Price Plus Pick-6 bets with classic-placed GLOBAL WARMING in the fifth at 1400 metres and J.R'S DREAM in the sixth at 1100 metres.
