No order given in corruption case

A policeman who was retried on corruption charges was freed in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

He is Constable Handel Bernard who is attached to the Sligoville police station in St Catherine.

When the case came before the court, only one witness turned up.

Resident Magistrate Anmarie Nembhard then decided that Bernard should be freed.

The RM declared a no order be handed down in the case

and Bernard was then told he was free to go.

Bernard's appearance arose from an incident in 2006 when he was accused of collected money from a motorist.

A report was made to anti-corruption investigators and a sting operation was set up. He was held by the police.

The director of public prosecutions ruled that the policeman be charged with breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act.

He was convicted in 2008. He, however, appealed the conviction and was granted a retrial.
