For the last three years, Leon Reynolds has been taking care of seven grandchildren. Reynolds became mother, father and grandfather to the children, whose ages range from five to 20 years old, after their mother Natalie Reynolds was killed by her common-law husband Hugh Wright. Reports are that on February 14, 2007, Natalie Reynolds, 38 and mother of nine children and her common-law husband Hugh Wright had a long-standing feud which became physical. During the altercation, Wright allegedly hit his common-law wife with a hoe and then slashed her throat. She died on the spot. Wright reportedly hanged himself in his field the following day. Since then, Reynolds has raised the seven children by himself. He said while he has got help from the Child Development Agency (CDA) and other reliable family members, it has been rough. "Food is expensive and supporting children going to school is not easy," said Reynolds. The children are now between the ages of five and 20 years old. Five of the seven are now living with him as the other two are adults and working. He explained that every two months the CDA gives financial assistance, in addition to counselling support for him as the father figure for the children. He also stated that between four or five times for the year he attends meetings organised by the CDA to help him with his parenting skills. However , although he has expressed gratitude for the support from the CDA, he stated that the financial support is not sufficient to take care of the children. "Right now, one a dem need a pair a shoes fi go back to school and I will have to make a sacrifice," he said. Anyone wishing to help Reynolds may contact him at 464-8312. |
