Deacon found guilty and fined for theft

A church deacon who stole several items from a supermarket was found guilty and fined in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

He is Evon Barrett, 39-year-old of Young Street in Spanish Town, St Catherine, fined $20,000 or 30 days hard labour by Senior Resident Magistrate Marcia Dunbar-Green.

During the trial, the crown heard testimonies from the arresting officer and a security guard who caught Barrett stealing the articles.

Allegations are that on March 6, 2010, Barrett went into Jimmy's Supermarket on Burke Road in Spanish Town and removed several sachets of soup mixes and a bottle of tonic.

He was searched and taken to the Spanish Town Police Station where he was charged with simple larceny by Constable Jermaine Black.
