A collective effort from several different entities brought smiles to the faces of many children who were treated at the Tredegar Park All-Age School on Friday. The more than 200 children were given bags, books, pencils, shirts and other items. "We have this treat in collaboration with the citizens' association and the Ministry of Education. It is a pleasant experience to see the smiles on the faces of the children," Social Development Commission Field Supervisor Barrington Mighton said. He said the initiative cost about $1 million and was a way to help with the social well-being of the children who were affected by violence. Hyacinth Land-Rochester, principal of the school, welcomed the initiative as a great investment. "It is very important to heal those children who have been affected by the problems around the community," she said. Many parents were very glad for the initiative. "What I am glad for is to see the Peace Management Initiative (PMI) giving individual counselling to some children," Theresa Francis, president of the Tredegar Park Citizens' Association said. Many children said it was a great relief to them and they loved it. The St Catherine-based school has been plagued by violence, which has resulted, in low enrolment. On Friday, August 13, eight persons were shot and killed by gunmen who invaded the community. |
