Two face court under the Cyber Crimes Act

Two men are now booked for court after becoming the first suspects in Jamaica to be charged in connection with breaches of the Cyber Crimes Act.

The men, whose identities are being withheld, are to appear in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court tomorrow. They were formally charged under sections 3, 6 and 8 of the Act last Friday, six days after investigations began.

Reports are that on August 28, about 9:30 a.m., two men were seen acting in what is described as a suspicious manner while in a motor car in front of an automated teller machine (ATM) located in Manchester.

The police were alerted and the men and the vehicle were searched.

It is alleged that electronic devices used to intercept transactions, and to duplicate the personal identification number (PIN) and other personal information of customers using the ATM, were found in the vehicle.

The two men were subsequently arrested.

The police say duplicate cards can be manufactured using the copied information to enable criminals to withdraw funds from customers' accounts, without them being aware.
