Grenadian national sentenced for ganja

Grenadian national Simeon Samuels will have to spend a longer time in Jamaica after he attempted to board a Caribbean Airlines flight that was to connect to Grenada with 1.8 ounces of ganja.

It is alleged that on the September 5 at around 12:30 p.m., Samuels was attempting to board a flight to Grenada when his luggage was searched and vegetable matter was found in a clear plastic bag in one of the compartments of his luggage. He was taken to the nearby police station and upon searching his luggage, police officers identified the vegetable-like' matter as ganja. Samuels was charged with possession of ganja, dealing in ganja and taking steps to export ganja.

When he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, he was found guilty on all charges and ordered to pay $2,400 or three months for possession; $4800 or six months for dealing and taking steps to export ganja. He is to serve a mandatory sentence of six months at hard labour.
