On-demand TV everywhere |
|||||
I had a chat with my mom and she was telling me tales of coming home to gather in front of the radio to wait, yes wait, for a programme. I have vague memories of doing the same for TV when I was a child, but now, the whole concept of waiting for what I want to watch seems like ancient history to me. I, like many of you, am spoilt. Instant soup. Instant coffee. Instant access to media and entertainment is not only possible, it verges on common. Don't believe me? Ok, let's look at the options. Let's say there is an international movie or TV you like which airs at an inconvenient time. I guarantee it will re-broadcast at another time. Same is true for the wide range of local content increasingly being produced. To make local content even more accessible, a number of local programmes are also broadcast on sister stations. Ok. Traditional TV and cable not good enough? Let's turn to your DVR or cable on-demand. Watch what you want, when you want with the touch of a button. You have complete programming control to determine when you want to watch and re-watch. Cable not enough? Wow, you're hard to please. If it is Internet you prefer, there is a plethora (and I use a big word deliberately because it is just soooo many) of options to choose from. AppleTV, Roku, Google TV, Boxee and other devices will bring content to you over the Internet. All you have to do is hook up a little box to your TV and your Internet connection and voila, you have TV streamed over the web to your TV - for a fee! (Come on, nothing in life is free). game consoles For those who don't want to buy yet another device, chances are your modern game console offers the same service. The US-based Netflix offers movies, TV and more to media junkies with XBox 360 and the Sony Playstation. What? You don't have a TV, but you want to watch TV? Fine, let's stretch it to the limits. There are some services like Hulu that allows you to watch TV on your computer, the volume of content available is limited by geography. In other words, you got to be in the US for the best service. And believe it or not, there are still more options. Clips of TV shows and movies are popping up all over the Internet; YouTube is a rich source of professional grade content, not just user-driven content. Finally, let's not forget our mobile devices! Many smart phones can stream video content, play MP3s, show podcasts and allow you to tune into radio stations locally and around the world. The mobile market has so much potential that soon we can expect mobile-only TV stations catering to those of us who just can't wait until we get home to enjoy our entertainment. In today's modern age, all the music, movies, radio and TV we want are instantly available to us whenever we want them on a variety of different platforms. The result has been much more content being made available (sometimes at expense of quality). Mom, the only thing you have to wait on now is my call - right after I watch a movie. Tech Glitch: Dona wrote: I am thinking of getting a tablet or slate to replace my laptop. What you say? Tech Fix: The iPad and its competitors are functional, but replacements they are not. Their processing power, ability to run standard programmes and absence of a keyboard make them ill suited for long-term use. Got a Tech Glitch? Seek your Tech Fix at facebook.com/carlettedeleon. |
