![]() Ian Allen - Tara-Sue Bennett of Edwin Allen celebrates after winning the girls' Class Two discus. Ryon Jones, Star Writer Edwin Allen were in record-breaking mood on yesterday's third and penultimate day of the 2011 staging of the Inter-Secondary School Sports Association (ISSA)/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Championships being staged at the National Stadium, as they showed their prowess both on and off the track. This saw the Frankfield-based school moved past defending champions Holmwood. Ristananna Tracey was responsible for decimating the record in the 400m hurdles, romping home to victory in a time of 55.81 seconds to eclipse Melaine Walker's record of 56.55 seconds, which was set back in 2001. Tracey's winning time is also an IAAF 'B' standard qualifying time. The Vere Technical pair of Olivia James (59.01) and Rushell Clayton (59.03) were second and third, respectively. Edwin Allen's Paul-Ann Gayle captured the Class Three discus with a throw of 39.55 metres to eclipse Peta Gaye Beckford's mark of 38.70m, which was set back in 2002. Shadae Lawrence (36.73m) copped the silver, while Holmwood's Ornella Livingston (34.74m) claimed the bronze. clearances Covent of Mercy also got in on the record-breaking act, as Gabrielle Foster claimed the girls' high jump with a clearance of 1.65m, shaving .01 meters off Janeive Russell's four-year old mark of 1.64m. Edwin Allen's Shannon Kalawan and St Andrew High's Stephanie Myrie claimed the silver and bronze, respectively, with clearances at 1.55m. Edwin Allen's Tara-Sue Bennett obliged in the Class Two girls' discus, taking the event with her penultimate throw of 40.34 metres. St Jago's Kellion Knibb had the furthest throw going into the final round, but could not match up to her Central Champs performance, which saw her toss 46m. Her throw of 39.45m was, however, good enough for the silver medal to go along with the gold medal she had won on day two, with a record-breaking throw in the shot put. St Jago's Shannique Waite (38.65m) captured the bronze. Paula-Ann Gayle added another record for Edwin Allen in the girls' Class Three discuss, posting a new mark of 39.55 to erase the old record of 38.70 set by Peta-Gaye Beckford of Holmwood in 2002. Edwin Allen were not finished there as they raked up 16 points in the Class Two 1500m, courtesy of a first and second finish of Marleena Eubanks and Carla Thompson. Eubanks, who had won the event last year at Class Three, stopped the clock at 4:41.74 seconds, with Thompson posting 4:46.67 and St Jago's Shevel McDonald (4:52.06) taking the bronze. |
