Seaview Gardens Health Centre reopens

KINGSTON:

The Seaview Gardens Health Centre in St Andrew was officially re-opened by Minister of Health Rudyard Spencer, on August 25, following rehabilitation of the facility.

The works, undertaken at a cost of $9.8 million, form part of the National Health Fund's (NHF) ongoing $300-million programme to rehabilitate health centres across the island.

Included in the renovation were: repair of the nurses' cottage; waterproofing of the roof; painting of the facility; roofing of the waiting area; repairs to bathrooms; installation of kitchen cupboards; and the paving of the parking area.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Spencer said the reopening of the health centre "is a true reflection of the Government's mandate to create a world -class health sector."

He said it is imperative that this and other health centres islandwide be renovated to give "true meaning to the abolition of user fees," which lessens the burden on hospitals.

The minister noted that, of the 56 health centres that were scheduled for renovation, 48 have been completely refurbished, with eight currently undergoing works.

Chairman of the NHF, Leslie Campbell, said the fund is proud to have provided the funding for the renovation of the health centre.

"The NHF supports the health service and its mission to ease the burden on health care in Jamaica, and we believe that we must focus on putting the resources in primary care, in order to achieve this mission," he said.

Member of Parliament for St Andrew Western, Anthony Hylton, thanked the health minister for responding to the needs of residents in ensuring that the health centre was rehabilitated.

He emphasised that the health centre plays a pivotal role in the community, as prenatal, antenatal, post-natal, dental and other services are fully utilised by the residents.
