New court date for cocaine case

Christopher Thomas, STAR Writer

The August 27 case of a teacher and his grandaunt who were arrested for cocaine inside instant chocolate will be mentioned again on February 14.

Ryan Nembhard of London, England, and Verna Powell of Bull Savannah, St Elizabeth, are charged with possession, dealing and attempting to export four pounds of cocaine.

Nembhard is represented by attorney Christopher Townsend. Powell's lawyer is Clayton Morgan.

The case should have gone to trial on Wednesday, but there were defects in the forensic report and there is still a police statement outstanding.

The prosecution sought an adjournment but Townsend argued that such a move would be an abuse of the judicial process, as his client's job is in jeopardy the longer the case is dragged out.

Resident Magistrate Vivienne Harris ordered the forensic analyst be subpoenaed to give evidence in the case.

Nembhard and Powell had their combined $1 million bail extended until February 14.

Allegations are that on August 27, Nembhard was boarding a flight to England at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, when his luggage was checked.

Four tins of instant chocolate were found in his bags. When one was opened, a white, powdery substance resembling cocaine was discovered. Nembhard was taken to the Narcotics office where the other three tins were opened and cocaine-like substance found.

Under questioning, Nembhard said Powell have given the tins to him to take to his cousin. Both were subsequently arrested.
