TCND makes big bust

A large quantity of ganja, several rounds of ammunition and two illegal firearms were seized by police on Thursday during an operation in Old Hope district, Little London,Westmoreland.

Police personnel from the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division (TCND) discovered the contraband and also seized three motor cars and a quantity of cash as well as arrested two persons in relation to the bust.

Their identities are however being withheld pending further investigations.

Reports are that between 6 a.m. and midday, the team of officers went to premises in the area and conducted a search.

Their search yielded 154 pounds (70 kilograms) of compressed ganja; 82.5 pounds (37.5 kilograms) of loose ganja, 15 pounds (6.8 kilograms) of ganja seeds, more than 490 assorted rounds of ammunition, two illegal firearms as well as three motor vehicles. The vehicles seized were: a Mercedes-Benz, a Toyota Station Wagon 4Runner and a Land Rover Pickup. The team also found and destroyed a half-acre of fully grown ganja.

The lawmen also seized two equipment used to compress ganja, US$9,980 ($868,260) and J$10,000.

The firearms seized were a Benelli 12-gauge M2 semi-automatic shotgun and a .38 Special Taurus revolver. Among the assorted rounds seized were:

- Thirty-three 5.56 calibre rounds

- Ninety-seven 12-gauge rounds

- Nineteen 20-gauge rounds

- Two 9 mm rounds

- Two .38 rounds

- One hundred and twenty-seven .38 special cartridges

- 29 wadcutter .38 special rounds

- One hundred and twenty-four 12-gauge cartridges.

Detectives are still probing the matter.
