Blake alert! - World champion continues stellar form at UTech Classics

He hardly looked to get out of first gear on Saturday at the UTech Classics, but Yohan Blake's 9.90 clocking in rainy conditions left the athlete feeling more than satisfied with his early season form, and perhaps serves as an ominous sign for the track and field world this season.

Blake, helped along by a +1.6 m/s wind, recovered from a slow start to stamp his class on the field and register the fastest time in the world over the distance so far this season at the National Stadium.

"I just came out here to have some fun. I showed that I was in pretty good shape in the 4x100m earlier, didn't get a good start here (100m), but I recovered well and followed through for the win," Blake said.

Worryingly for some, despite the poor conditions and bad start, the sprinter is sure he could have done more.

"I could have pushed some more towards the end and gone faster, but coach told me to take it easy today, and that's what I did."

Earlier, Blake ran a blistering second leg in the 4x100m relay to help his Racers Track Club, which had the world's fastest man and teammate Usain Bolt as anchor, to a world-leading time of 37.82 seconds. After a major breakthrough last summer when the sprinter captured 100m gold at the Daegu World Championships, the 22-year-old promises much for the future and perhaps even for this summer's London Olympic Games. He closed the season in fine style last year going on to clock the second-fastest time ever over 200m (19.26), bettered only by Bolt's 19.19, and it seems he looks ready to pick up right where he left off.
