Nesta Carter - Ricardo Makyn World indoor silver medallist Nesta Carter, 20.48, was one of the bright sparks for the MVP Track Club at this weekend's UTech Classics, as the powerful sprinter produced a late burst of speed to take the men's 200m ahead of Racers' Daniel Bailey, 20.60 and G.C. Foster's Rasheed Dwyer, 20.71. The meet, which pitted Jamaica's top two clubs together in several events, was a very successful one for the Racers Track Club. Former National female 400 metres champion Rosemarie Whyte added to a strong night for Racers, by posting the third world-leading time of the meet. Whyte, who is being conditioned by former world champion Bertland Cameron, looked awesome. Despite being pressured earlier in the race by Sherone Simpson, she picked up the pace for the final 150 metres to pull away, scoring a commanding win in a time 51.13 seconds. Whyte's former Holmwood Technical teammate Aneisha McLaughlin (52.49) and Stephanie McPherson (52.98) finished second and third, respectively, for MVP. Simpson, who had the previous world-leading time of 51.42 seconds, done late January, stopped several metres from the finish line suffering from cramps. The meet started on a bright note with MVP athletes also among the records. The quartet of McLaughlin, Simpson, Shericka Williams and Trinidadian-based Ayana Hutchinson won the women's 4x100 metres relay in 44.08 seconds, erasing the old mark of 44.12 seconds, set by G.C. Foster College in 2008. UTech with a flying anchor leg from Carrie Russell was second in 46.36 seconds, while The Mico University College was third in 47.48 seconds. Former national champion Oral Thompson (SWEPT) took the men's 400m in 45.95, while Racers' Josef Robertson was too strong for the rest in the 400m hurdles, winning in 51.02. UTech's Ricardo Cunningham, 1:48.65, was first in the men's 800m with Edwin Allen's Desreen Montaque winning the women's equivalent in 2:07.39. |
