Volunteers from the Digicel Foundation visited Independence City Primary school and read a variety of books to students in recognition of Read Across Jamaica Day. With Jamaica celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the Digicel Foundation joined up with local children's book authors Jana Bent and Kelly Magnus to bring greater focus to cultural books in schools as part of the foundation's Read Across Jamaica initiative. The Digicel Foundation team visited selected schools across the island with enrichment centres from the foundation to read from Jamaica's cultural children's books. Executive director of the Digicel Foundation, Samantha Chantrelle, expressed that this initiative underscores the foundation's strong focus on empowering youths through education and culture. "At Digicel Foundation, we are committed to not only improving the level of literacy in primary schools across Jamaica, we also recognise the importance of supporting initiatives to preserve our culture,"she said. "Partnering with our local authors therefore helps us to fulfil these two important commitments of showing students how fun and beneficial it is to be able to read while learning about their culture".
