End of the road for Gardner? |

Bolton Wanderers' Ricardo Gardner (right) vies for the ball against Tottenham Hotspurs Reggae Boy Ricardo Gardner could be one of several veteran players on the Bolton Wanders chopping block following the clubs relegation from English top flight football a few weeks ago. Gardner, a club legend at the Reebook Staduim, having made more than 400 appearances for the club since signing in 1998, has struggled to stay fit in recent times after being hampered by various injuries. The player was given a one-year extension on his contract last season, with reduced terms, but was still unfortunately only able to make four league appearances after suffering a knee injury. Bolton, who enjoyed a 12-year stint after gaining promotion in the 2000-2001, a campaign in which Gardner, now 33-years-old, played a crucial role, will lose around £30 million because of their fall from the top flight, plus losses in TV and sponsorship money. Phil Gartside, Bolton chairman, revealed that the club intends to cut the wage bill in half by the start of their next season in the championship. "If you look at our wage bill this year compared to what it was last year, allowing for a couple of people to come in, it will be up to 50 per cent of what we paid out last year," Gartside told UK online publication (theboltonnews.co.uk) . "That flexibility is essential when you are going to lose £25 million of revenue." Young defender Mark Connolly Ivan Klasnic, Paul Robinson, Gretar Steinsson, Sean Davis, Robbie Blake and Gardner are expected to be leading the march out of the club. However, it is not entirely impossible that the Jamaican might still be a Trotter next season, but that would almost certainly see him forced to take a further reduction in wages. Bolton were relegated on the final day of the season, following a 2-2 draw with Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium. |
