JDF confirms use of mortar bombs in Tivoli incursion |

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) last night confirmed that mortar bombs were used in the Tivoli Gardens incursion in 2010. A release from the military last night said the JDF had intelligence that indicated there were highly fortified barricades and defensive positions in the community, some of which were lined with explosives and other incendiary devices. "Mortar rounds were fired into open areas as part of a diversion. At no time were persons or buildings targeted. This diversionary tactic created confusion and disorientation among the entrenched gunmen, and allowed the JDF to use bulldozers to breech the barricades and enter the community," the release said. The JDF said it is satisfied that the use of mortars was not only accurate and effective, but justified and necessary in order to achieve the operational objectives.
