A man accused of using a sharp instrument to chop his former cousin-in-law had his bail extended when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday. Charged with assault occasioning bodily harm is Garfield Newman. Newman pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court heard that on the day of the incident, about 2 p.m., the complainant, Nordia Sterling, was at her home on the veranda when Newman entered the premises and allegedly chopped her after the two started arguing. According to the complainant, Newman was upset with her because she ended the relationship with his cousin, and also because she took out a restriction order against him. The court was told that the complainant and Newman's cousin share a six-year-old child together. Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey ordered that Newman gives his fingerprints to the police and returns to court on July 30. |
