Bridgeport Primary School became the latest institution to benefit from Digicel Foundation Enrichment room project dubbed: '1-3, easy as can be'. The handing over ceremony took place at the school located on Germaine Road, recently. The project is in collaboration with the Ministry of Education to equip schools especially those that fall below the national literacy level, with tangible reading materials. In 2010, the results from the school's Grade Three diagnostic tests, showed that only 44 per cent of the students had achieved mastery in Reading Comprehension, and only 22 per cent in the Communication Task. The school needed a higher quality remedial solution for their students in order to significantly improve the students' performance for the Grade Four Literacy examination. They applied to the Digicel Foundation for an Enrichment Centre and they received the seal of approval. Reading teacher Angella Francis, was thankful for the gift as this hands on approach caters for her students" needs. Sharing in the moment were the school's principal, Lorna Lewis, Member of Parliament for South East St Catherine, Colin Fagan, and councillor for the Independence City Division, Keith Blake. Executive Director of the Digicel Foundation, Samantha Chantrelle, expressed her excitement at handing over this Enrichment Centre to the school noting that "The Digicel Foundation is committed to supporting the government's goal of 100 per cent literacy at the primary school level. We believe that all children have the right to an education that is tailored to their needs and allows them to reach their full potential. Through our Enrichment Initiative we are going to make sure that every child in our programme has that chance."
