Man on fraud rap granted bail

A man accused of conspiracy to defraud after he was accosted with some missing cheque leaves was granted bail in the sum of $200,000 when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

The accused, Lorne Scott, did not enter a plea to the charges.

The court was told that the five cheque leaves, property of National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), went missing on Friday, June 8.

They were stolen from the premises after an employee who was copying the cheques left them unattended after the copy machine started to malfunction. On the employee's return to the machine, the cheques were discovered missing.

The NSWMA advised the general public of the stubs that were missing.

Scott was subsequently caught with the cheques.

When asked, the investigating officer declared she had no objection to bail, however, other members at the Fraud Squad had objections as they were also investigating Scott on another matter concerning stolen cheques.

His attorney, Peter Champagnie, in making a bail application, argued that his client is suffering from an illness that was unknown to him until recently, when he went and did some research.

Resident Magistrate Lorna Shelly Williams granted the accused bail with one or two sureties and made a fingerprint order. Scott returns to court on July 12.

He is to report to the Central Police Station on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
