Portmore Gospel Assembly Preparatory School Graduation exercise

The Ministry of Education's Acting Regional Director for Region 5, Nadine Leachman, told the 20 grade six students on their way to high school that they must grow and flourish where they are planted.

She made the remark during PGA Preparatory School's graduation exercise at the Portmore Gospel Assembly Church on Portmore Drive.

Leachman told the students to block out the negatives. "Adults who love to tell you you can't make it - based on where you come from, the family, the community, 'just like yu wutlis pupa' - mash down that lie!" she said emphatically. "As a matter of fact, that's motivation to prove them wrong. So you did not select a certain school, but you were placed there. so what? There is a window in a child's head. Make that decision, one that will change your life completely today."

She urged the students to "find that motivating factor" and look within themselves. "I'm going to use the opportunity to show them that it's all about me. I'm going to make good where I am just like the others."

She also appealed to the parents to give their children support in order for them to be successful in their education.

The graduates were rewarded for their successes at the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT); however, two students shone brighter than the others.

Wolmers Girls' School-bound Monique Hamilton, and Abraham McMorris, who is heading to St Catherine High, emerged as the top girl and boy, respectively.

In addition to the graduating class receiving kudos, grades two-five were given prizes for their academic achievements.

Three persons who gave invaluable service to PGA Prep were also recognised by the school and the church. This list included past principal for seven years, Cynthia Lumsden, who was unavoidably absent.

Lumsden, according to the chairman of the school board, the Reverend Conrad Reid, had improved school safety.

The school's bursar, Lona Anderson, who has served the institution for 30 years, and teacher Violet Foster, were also honoured.
