DPP to decide cops' fate

Andre Williams, STAR Writer

The fate of three policemen who are reportedly in custody following a sting operation recently will be decided by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), THE STAR has learnt.

It is expected that the DPP will rule whether or not charges should be laid against the three officers who are facing corruption charges.

The three members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force implicated comprise a district constable, a corporal and a constable.

On Friday, the policemen were nabbed during an Anti-Corruption Branch operation.

The policemen, who are attached to the Denham Town and Trench Town police stations, are accused of soliciting money from a motorist who was found to be in violation of the Road Traffic Act.

Information gathered by THE STAR is that the officers held the motorist with fraudulent car papers and negotiations followed thereafter.

According to reports, the officers allegedly demanded $30,000 not to prosecute the driver.

Soon after, a report was made to the Anti-Corruption Branch and a sting operation was installed.

THE STAR was informed by a reliable source that during the process the district constable was held collecting money.

Preliminary investigations later revealed the other two officers' involvement. They were subsequently arrested.
