Dear Pastor, I have a relative who was deported from the United States after living there for about 30 years. It was shocking and sad because she didn't have any immediate family in Jamaica, as we had all migrated to America. She couldn't find any job when she was sent back to Jamaica, and, unfortunately, she ended up associating with the wrong crowd. She eventually spent time in prison. She served seven years in prison in the United States and spent more time in Jamaica. K.F. Dear K.F., I regret hearing that your relative was deported and served time in prison. Deportees find it difficult to adjust after living abroad. Many feel totally lost and depressed and some are tempted to commit suicide. Therefore, they need all help and encouragement from others. accommodation I understand that those without relatives, or don't know how to find them, can receive temporary accommodation and counselling from the Hibiscus Home. There are other groups that offer accommodation, help and advice. Some deportees have done well. They have been fortunate to get jobs and others have become farmers and entrepreneurs. Unfortunately, some members of the public do not trust deportees. Some deportees have committed crimes abroad and have continued to engage in much wrongdoings in Jamaica. However, each deportee should be offered help, initially, and given time to prove whether they are honest and trustworthy. Pastor |
