A man who was caught at a restaurant a short distance from where he had allegedly raped a woman two years ago was remanded when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday. He is Kirk McDermott, 36-year-old labourer, of no fixed address. The court heard that on May 16, 2010, McDermott met the complainant along the Port Henderson "Back" Road in Portmore. He is said to have approached the complainant and requested sexual services. They agreed on a price and the accused convinced the woman to accompany him to his home. Upon reaching a section of Bridgeport, the woman was taken to the back of a house instead. The accused reportedly brandished a knife, placed it at her throat, and forced her to perform various sexual acts. After the ordeal, he told the woman to run. She did and was rescued by a resident. A report was then made to the Bridgeport police station and an investigation launched. On Friday, July 13, McDermott was spotted by the complainant while having a meal at a restaurant in Bayside. McDermott was subsequently charged by Detective Constable Phillip Mullings of the Bridgeport police station. He is to return to court on September 4 when the matter will again be mentioned. - R.T.
