Mystery surrounds death of former inmate
SHELDON WILLIAMS, Staff Reporter

Scrutiny surrounds the death of a former inmate at the Horizon Adult Remand Centre who spent four years detained in the correctional services without being tried and convicted.

There will be a special sitting of the Coroner's Court on August 29 so that an enquiry will be made into the questionable death of Marlon Clarke.

For the family of the deceased, who died in hospital on February 24, his death could have been avoided had he received immediate medical treatment for his deteriorating health and had not been neglected by correctional officers.

"He took sick sometime last year and asked to be taken to the doctor and they ignored it. In December, him tell mi seh him chest a hurt him," Nicolene Scott, Clarke's sister reasoned.

On the date of the sitting, evidence is expected to be heard from Dr Jephthah Ford.

Dr Forde made an indication that he will be asking for subpoenas for the commissioner of corrections, the director of custodial services, the superintendent of the Horizon Adult Remand Centre and the medical officer in charge of the prison.

At the same time, the relevant medical orderlies and the medical officers who may have been involved with the management of the deceased will be subpoenaed.

Additionally, his custodial records, his medical records, his hospital records, both at the Kingston Public Hospital and the National Chest Hospital and his custodial records at the Ocho Rios Police Station will be brought forward.

Clarke was represented by Leroy Equiano of the Jamaica Legal Aid Clinic. Up to press time last night, THE WEEKEND STAR was unable to make contact with Equiano.
