Narcotics police arrest two after ganja seizure

Two men held in connection with a large quantity of ganja that was seized by narcotics police appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Charged with possession of and dealing in ganja are 28-year-old Kirk Watson and Curtis Richards, both from the Corporate Area.

Richards was offered $500,000 bail with one or two sureties, while Watson was remanded after his bail application was denied.

The court heard that Watson, when apprehended, allegedly said, "Officer is a phone call mi get fi carry it go St Mary and mi nuh get paid for the delivery yet."

The court was told that on August 10, a team of police swooped down on premises located at 7 Westminster Road and seized 2,190 pounds (995 kilograms) of ganja.

According to reports, Watson was caught inside a truck on the compound with several white bags containing some of the seized contraband in his possession.

Richards was nabbed by the police under suspicion that he was a part of the illegal activity being carried out on the property.

The police report states that he was standing close to one of the vehicle with the trunk opened and a quantity of ganja inside.

A Mitsubishi containing 40 knitted bags and a Nissan which had four bags were also seized.

Cash totalling $99,000 was found inside one of the vehicles.

Resident Magistrate Maxine Ellis, after hearing all the arguments of the defence, offered Richards bail with one or two surety and ordered him to surrender his travel documents.

Richards is also to report at the Duhaney Park police Mondays and Fridays.

The RM explained to the court that Watson's bail application was turned down because the police had to continue their investigation and from all indications thus far, the accused seem to be directly linked to the drugs.

A fingerprint order was made for both men, who are to return to court on August 29 for the matter to again be mentioned.
