Asafa eyes Rio... Former world record holder won't give up on Olympic dream
Andre Lowe, Senior Staff Reporter

His last three Olympic Games experiences may not have been memorable, but former 100m world record holder is hoping to take one last shot at his first individual Olympics medal four years down the road at the Rio 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Powell, had fifth placed finishes at the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing games and finished last a few weeks ago at the London games, after pulling up midway the race because of a land-standing groin injury.

The Jamaican, who turns 30 in November, has not thrown in the towel just yet on his Olympic ambitions and is hopeful that he will be in shape to secure that elusive individual Olympic medal in Rio, a glaring absence among his list of accomplishments that include over 70 sub-10 seconds 100m clocking, two 100m world records and two IAAF World Championships 100m bronze medals.

"I would love to be in Brazil," said Powell yesterday during an interactive online question and answer session with his fans through his sponsor LIME.

A very light-hearted Powell, while joking about his age, says he will be working hard to give himself a chance of making the trip to Rio and he is hopeful that he will still be active by the time the next instalment of the Olympic Games comes around.

"I will be working hard for it, hopefully I won't be retired by then seeing that I will be 23 turning 24 at that time," Powell laughed.

personal best

The MVP Track Club star, who has a personal best of 9.72, which he posted shortly after the Beijing Olympic Games, pointed out that he will be looking to keep himself in shape and his times low over the coming years; citing that he is confident of being a part of the 100m trio in Brazil in 2016.

"I don't know, I really hope that I am there though. I will be working hard and hopefully I can improve my times and start to run some really fast times again," Powell said. "But if I keep doing that, then I will be there (2016 Olympic Games)."

Powell, with a time of 9.77, first broke the 100m world record in 2005 in Athens, one year after his first Olympic Games failure and inside the same stadium that hosted the games.

He returned in 2007 in Rieti, Italy to better that mark with a 9.74 run.
