Portland: A massive landslide which occurred shortly after 9 p.m. last night at See Me No More corner near Ross Craig, in Portland, has left hundreds of motorists and residents marooned. Among those stranded is mayor of Port Antonio, Benny White, who had earlier toured the Manchioneal area to have a first-hand view of damage caused by torrential rainfall on Sunday night. Speaking to the Star by telephone, Mayor White, who was returning to Port Antonio, said several trees were uprooted which has resulted in that stretch of road leading to See Me No More corner being blocked, rendering it impassable to vehicular traffic. The parish has been experiencing heavy downpours since Friday night as a result of Tropical Storm Isaac, which left several roadways inundated. Since Sunday night, dozens of residents in several communities in East Portland, including Breast Works, Land Settlement, Manning Avenue, and Janga Gully, were affected after nearby rivers overflowed their banks and inundated several homes and grocery shops. And as the unfavourably weather conditions continue, disaster co-ordinator for the parish, Denise Lewis, is appealing to residents living in low-lying and flood prone areas of the parish to be on the lookout for rising water, and evacuate the minute disaster threatens. |
