A man who is accused of threatening to shoot another was remanded in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

He is Patrick Matthan, 24, labourer from Old Harbour, St Catherine.

In applying for bail, Matthan's attorney, Earl Hamilton, told the court his client was severely beaten in jail.

"Your Honour, I am making a bail on humanitarian grounds, as he was beaten while in Her Majesty's care, plus he is not guilty," Hamilton said.

Resident Magistrate Simone Maddix told the lawyer she is not minded at this time to grant bail.

Allegations are that the complainant went to a shop when he and another man had a dispute. The court heard that during the dispute, Matthan pulled a 'rusty' pistol. He is alleged to have trained the weapon on the complainant and threatened to kill him.

A report was made to the Old Harbour police and the accused was subsequently arrested and charged with assault and illegal possession of firearm. He appears in the Gun Court on Friday.
