Principal lays down 'No bleaching, tight pants' rule
Andre' Williams, STAR Writer

One western Jamaica high-school principal has made his intentions abundantly clear at the start of the school term. No incorrect attire or skin bleaching will be allowed on the campus.

Principal of Herbert Morrison Technical High School, Paul Adams, and his staff members were yesterday on the lookout for students who were in breach of the institution's dress code.

Our news team was told that there were students who failed to wear the correct attire, and the usual process not to allow them on the school compound was upheld.

The principal told THE STAR, "We are on the lookout not only for September, but the calendar year ... We have noticed yearly trends and were out this morning (yesterday) to correct the practice."

He continued, "The girls in short dresses were cautioned and they promptly pulled them out. Those with incorrect socks went across the road and purchased the correct colour ... The boys wearing the tight pants also promptly untightened them."

The principal, however, outlined to THE STAR that by and large, most of the students were properly attired.

As it relates to skin bleaching, the principal pointed to one specific instance realised yesterday.

He said, "Interestingly I saw one boy with a 'fading bleach' which gave the impression that he was trying to cover up in time for school but it didn't reach."

Adams went further to say "If the attire is inappropriate it leads to other behaviours that are also inappropriate, so our aim is to monitor and bring an end to the practice."

The principal was also quick to point out to THE STAR that past trends were being carefully examined.

He said: "In the first week of school you would not normally find the rule breakers ... They return on the second week and thereafter ... So, as we proceed we will be looking out for them."
