American caught at NMIA remanded

The man who was caught with over €300,000 (J$34,596,300) at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston was remanded when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Forty-one-year-old American citizen Sohail Muhammad Siddiq has been charged with breaches of the Customs and Proceeds of Crime Act.

He is to return to court on September 27 for a bail application to be made by his attorney Peter Champagnie.

The prosecution is alleging that on the day in question, the accused who resides in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, arrived on a flight from Panama, en route from Dubai.

However, during routine security checks, his luggage was searched and €313,500 (J$36,095,473) and US$700 (J$63,000) were found.

When asked to account for the cash, Siddiq told the police that the money was to be used to buy cellphones in the island.

He was taken into custody and charged.

Siddiq, the court was told, is also being investigated in relation to suspected links with terrorist groups in Africa and the Middle East.

It is understood that prior to arriving in Jamaica, Siddiq travelled to Dubai, Afghanistan, and South Africa.
