|||||
The policeman who has been charged in connection with the September 1 killing of a pregnant woman in St Thomas was remanded when he made his first appearance in court yesterday. He is Corporal Dwayne Smart from the St Thomas Division. Corporal Smart is facing charges of murder, wounding with intent, assault, and illegal possession of a firearm. He is to return to the Home Circuit Court tomorrow when his lawyer Valerie Neita-Robertson is expected to make a bail application. Reports are that on the day in question, the cop and 27-year-old Kay-Ann Lamont got into an altercation after he attempted to arrest her for using indecent language. During the scuffle, she was shot twice in the head. She died on the spot. It is alleged that the corporal then shot Lamont's sister in the shoulder, and also attempted to shoot another sister. She managed to escape. Corporal Smart was charged following a ruling by the Director of Public Prosecutions. |
