In the midst of the plummeting job market, Jamaicans have been exploring a number of avenues in hopes of finding gainful employment. One such avenue, THE STAR has learnt, is a page on Facebook called 'I Need a Job Jamaica'. Though the page was created in 2011, it has recently been creating waves among persons on the social networking site. Since its creation, the page has racked up over 12,000 likes. When the page was visited yesterday, several listings were seen with jobs ranging from babysitters to personal bankers and cardiovascular technicians. THE STAR understands that over the last few weeks a number of persons who visited the page were able to land either an interview or a job. Kemoy Francis, who applied for an office attendant position that was listed on the page, said, "I got a call for an interview tomoro, thanks, I Need a Job Jamaica." THE STAR also saw where other persons thanked the page for helping them to secure employment. One person wrote, "I got the job and will be starting tomoro, thank you." But despite the fact that the page has been helping the jobless, there are still those who are frustrated by the crisis. "I've been on it (the page) for almost a year now and I can't get a decent job, still waiting on one," one woman said. Another said, "Man it's really frustrating. Sending out so many applications and you're qualified with experience and nothing. Sometimes I feel they simply advertise jobs bcuz of protocol, but they really have friends to fill the vacancy." In the meantime, THE STAR understands that apart from posting jobs, the page has also been giving visitors tips on how to prepare for interviews and how to start various businesses. |
