Scores of disgruntled street sellers who are against the latest anti-vending drive protested along North Street, Old Harbour, in St Catherine on Monday. The mostly female protesters said they are being targeted by the Old Harbour police, who are stopping them from selling on sidewalks. "Him (the senior policeman) must go, him too hard. Dem yah police don't have no conscience, as other police come here and no behave like him. Him too strict," a female placard-bearer said. The vendors, who normally sell along Vaz and Darlington drives, said a particular senior personnel is just too stringent in enforcing the no-vending rules.. "My child go to high school and it tek me $1,000 per day to send him go to school. Him too hard, we need fi sell inna di road," a vendor said. The police told The Star for years the vendors have been selling illegally in proximity to the station, where they block the sidewalk. "It is an anti-vending drive to bring order to the town. However, we are willing to meet with the affected persons to address the situation," Inspector Gary James said. Meanwhile, commercial services manager at the St Catherine Parish Council, Ferdinand Page, said there are no vending streets in Old Harbour. The Star was informed that a number of anti-vending charges are likely to be brought against vendors whose wares were seized during the operation last weekend. |
