Police report two deaths due to heavy rains |

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer The police in St Catherine have put the number of deaths in the parish associated with heavy rains that has been lashing the islands since Thursday at two. A three-year-old boy was found in a flooded gully in McCooks Pen, St Catherine, yesterday. The infant's body was retrieved about 4 p.m. by a resident who claimed that he heard cries of distress earlier. The resident said he was told that the child was washed away by gushing waters. Police personnel have yet to reveal the identity of the child pending further investigations. Meanwhile, a 19-year-old female, who was washed away during the heavy rains, has now been identified. She is Alexia Douglas of Sandy Ground, Sligoville, St Catherine. Reports are that about 9 p.m. on Sunday, Douglas was a passenger in a car travelling from Sligoville. raging water Upon reaching a section of the road, the vehicle got into difficulty because of raging water. Passengers jumped out. However, Douglas got into difficulties and was washed away. Her body was found in Lauriston, St Catherine. Meanwhile, the Cobourn Gully in Nightingale Grove overflowed its bank and flooded a number of homes leaving residents fuming. "I have been living here for 30 years and every time there is a shower of rain this is how I suffer from rain water and mud. It's very frustrating," a resident said. In Frazier Content, the heavy rains caused several residents to lose poultry and livestock. Several dead goats, chickens and other animals were seen when THE STAR visited the community, while roads were damaged by the water. Premises in Hartlands, Hill Run, Fairfield and Waterloo were all flooded. |
