TEXT FROM FRIEND CAUSES DOUBT

Today, we continue with our buzz-worthy feature, Paternity Puzzle. Below is the winning story for the month of August.

The feature will continue to attempt to help families solve paternity disputes. One more lucky person will get a free test and reveal the truth once and for all.

This and every Wednesday we will publish the story of a mother and an alleged father, who will both give their sides in tales of allegations and denials.

Be sure to follow the series as THE STAR awards a free DNA test sponsored by Caribbean Genetics to the most interesting story for the month.

André Williams, STAR Writer

When 28-year-old Latoy Miller* and the alleged father of her child, 30-year-old Kemar Sharp, met with THE STAR recently, at first glance, there were no telling the two were no longer involved.

However, as the 'lay-it-all-on-the-table' interview began, the tension was unearthed and smiles quickly turned into frowns as they recalled a time when their relationship seemed destined to last.

Miller, a supermarket cashier, and Sharp. a self-proclaimed 'hustler', met in 2009, on a bus while travelling to Kingston from Portmore. After exchanging telephone numbers and venturing on a small date, they had no idea the bigger picture was to come a few years later.

They both admit that right now there exists no relationship between them.

Kevin said: Well really and truly, I can't settle with a girl I can't trust so no relationship right ya now.

Latoy said: No relationship right now ... I am fine with that ... him jus need fi respect me his babymother and take care of his child.

Kevin said: I want it to be my child still cause I have a lot in store for him on top of the many I have done.

Latoy said: Is not what we want it to be enuh ... I know whose child it is and the baby is his.

THE STAR then posed the what if/ if not question to the two.

Kemar expressed, "If the result says it is my child I will endorse him and take care of him no doubt ... If is not my child, well that will just show what I have been hearing is true ... simple."

Latoy responded, "That's not possible ... Me know who me lay with so me not even ago think about that (with a serious look on her face) ... When it is proven that the child is his, he should keep up with his responsibilities."

THE STAR was provided with a copy of the birth certificate by the father.

Kevin said: The baby got my name because at the time the tings never start talk up yet.

Latoy said: "What kinda things a talk up Kemar ... The baby name Kemar Jr."

It seems the seeds of doubt had been sewn in Kemar's mind shortly after he returned from a trip abroad.

Kevin revealed, "Bwoy is a bag a tings enuh bredda ... Mi take a trip go US and fly in back. And shortly after, mi start hear pregnancy. A link of mine tell me say him go visit her one day cause he was near by and him see a strange car park at the gate so him nuh bother stop ... Plus, neighbour tell mi say man all sleep over ... So, as a man, mi have to wonder because me nah father nuh man youth."

Latoy countered, "A him have doubts ... My only doubt is if him a real man or man weh listen friend and company?"

Kevin said: "Yuh can stay deh, about two months after the child born mi start hear a bag a tings a reel out ... So mi check her phone, and mi see a text from a man a ask her if the baby alright and what the baby need."

Latoy said: "You really come back with that? A trouble one a mi male friend did a give and send that text ... I turned him into the godfather because of that text. A mi son godfather now. Car that was at my gate? ... All now I don't know what dem a talk bout. A bus mi take, mi nuh have car man."

Latoy told THE STAR the community in which they live have their say in other people's lives, as some nosey people live in their scheme.

Kevin said: "The people dem know what dem know ... Mi jus want deh pan di safe side ... Better mi know now than 10 years down the line.

Another exciting question was popped, who does the baby look like?

Latoy said: "The child has his fingers and toes ... The baby look like both of us to me!"

Kevin said: "People say baby can look like you and is not yours ... I don't like the guess game ... I want to be sure!"
