One of two men sentenced for ganja

One of two men who have been charged in relation to 106 pounds of ganja was sentenced in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Leebert Lawrence, who is charged jointly with Shaneil Coombs, pleaded guilty and was fined $15,000 or three months for possession of ganja, and given 18 months, imprisonment for ganja trafficking. An additional ganja trafficking charge for Lawrence was thrown out.

Coombs, who has pleaded not guilty, is to return to court on October 9 when his attorney is expected to be present.

Allegations are that, on the day in question, both accused men were travelling in a motor vehicle on Spanish Town Road when they were signalled by the cops to stop.

The court heard that the men disobeyed the command and were pursued by the police.

It is alleged that the motor vehicle which was being driven by Lawrence subsequently crashed into a fast-food restaurant in down- town, Kingston, and when the motor vehicle weresearched, 106 pounds (48.18 kilograms) of ganja were found.

Both accused men were later charged with possession of, dealing in, and trafficking ganja.
