Man on assault charges gets bail

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

A St Catherine man who reportedly pulled a black object from his waist and hit a man in the face during an alleged confrontation was granted bail when he appeared in court yesterday.

He is Omar Grant, 30-year-old labourer, of Wynter's Pen, St Catherine.

When the matter came up in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court, attorney-at-law Lancelot Clarke Jr made a strenuous bail application on Grant's behalf. He told the court that despite his client admitting to a previous conviction, the act took place five years ago.

The lawyer said the charges against Grant would be defended strongly and that he is not a flight-risk. Grant was subsequently granted $200,000 bail on condition that he returns to court on November 15.

Allegations are that on June 8, the accused rode a bicycle up to the complainant and an altercation developed between them. A report was made to the police, an investigation resulted in a search at the accused house where two live 9mm rounds were found.

He was subsequently charged with assault at common-law, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and illegal possession of ammunition.
